Date: Tuesday, 11th October, 2011
The new Multi Purpose Theatre at the Japan-Pacific ICT Centre at the University of the South Pacific, funded by the Government of Japan, will be officially opened by the Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Fiji, H.E. Mr. Yutaka Yoshizawa at 9.30 a.m. on Wednesday, 12th October, 2011. In addition to the grant of JPY 2.2 billion (approx. F$43 million) for Phase I works which included construction of two buildings, with facilities consisting of computer laboratories, conference rooms and specialised equipment, the Government of Japan donated further JPY 857 million (approx. F$18 million) for the phase II works of this project to construct a multipurpose lecture theatre. Furthermore, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has begun a three year Japanese Technical Cooperation for the ICT for human development and human security. As part of the Japanese Technical Cooperation, JICA in collaboration with key stakeholders of USP will support IT services to optimise the performance and scalability of USPNet with Ku-band Technology, conduct necessary trainings and provide expertise on enhancement of Distance and Flexible Learning courses utilizing mobile technology (m-Learning) and provide mentoring and comprehensive advice on designing two new bachelor’s degree courses in Net-Centric Computing and Software Engineering. Japan has a long and friendly relationship with USP since 1996 and continues to strengthen its friendship with USP and the Pacific. The architectural expression of the new multipurpose lecture theatre is unique and portrays the ‘Pacific Spirit’ depicting the strong Pacific art tradition prevalent in the region, as shown in the Tapa designs on the building. The Japan-Pacific ICT centre was constructed in two Phases. Work on Phase I was completed and officially handed over on 6th July 2010. An additional grant was approved for work on Phase II to supplement the function of the new ICT Centre with a multi-purpose lecture theatre. The new lecture theatre has a sitting capacity of over 300 and is fitted with stage equipment and video projector. |
